Bunia, July 10th, 2025 (CPA).- A dozen young people in conflict with the law who were caught disrupting the organization of the closing ceremony for the 2024-2025 school year were arrested by the police in Bunia, Ituri, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, police sources said on Thursday.
« The city commander organized a manhunt for these criminals and delinquents, or children in conflict with the law, on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the 2024-2025 school-years, who were seeking to disrupt the ceremony. During this hunt, a dozen were arrested and taken to the urban police headquarters, » said Senior Commissioner Gérard Abeli, urban commander of the PNC/Bunia. He justified this operation by citing the resurgence of racketeering orchestrated by a group of young people from certain neighborhoods of Bunia against students from schools located in the city center.
« A group of young delinquents from Camp Ndoromo, the Military Police (PM) camp, the Hoho, Opas and Bigo neighbourhoods are attacking students from various schools located on the hill of the school complex, Shaloom, Kabengele and Nelson Mandela. These young delinquents extort all valuables from the students, including money, watches, shoes and uniforms, before disappearing into thin air, » he added. Senior Commissioner Gérard Abeli invited the parents responsible for these children in conflict with the law to come to his office for verification pending further proceedings in accordance with the law of the Republic.
