Kinshasa, June 3rd, 2026 (CPA).- The worrying situation in the prisons of Haut-Katanga, a province in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has been, on Tuesday, the subject of discussions on Tuesday between the Minister in charge of Justice and the provincial deputies from the said entity in Kinshasa, according to an account X consulted on Wednesday by CPA. This Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026, I have received a delegation from the Provincial Assembly of Haut-Katanga led by the Honourable Liliane Komba Maka.
Our discussions have focused on the worrying situation in the province’s prisons, particularly Boma Prison in Kipushi, which is facing overcrowding, food shortages and inadequate healthcare,” it is read in a post on the X account of Guillaume Ngefa, Minister of State in charge of Justice and Keeper of the Seals. “In light of these challenges and the health risks they entail, I have decided to deploy a mission to assess prison services in the near future in order to identify concrete and sustainable solutions,” has added Minister Guillaume Ngefa, whilst indicating that the prison issue will also be integrated into inter-institutional mechanisms for the prevention and management of epidemics.
Mr Ngefa has reaffirmed the Government’s determination to combat the judicial desert through the construction of modern judicial complexes. “As a strategic province for DRC, Haut-Katanga must fully benefit from this dynamic modernisation of the justice system, in the service of human dignity and the rule of law,” he has emphasised. The prison conditions at Boma Prison in Kipushi, Haut-Katanga, had been condemned by the province’s deputies during an inspection visit. This prison, which is designed to hold 50 people, currently houses more than 400 inmates.
