Kasaï-Central: 500 subsidiary judgments granted to children born during the Kamuina Nsapu conflict

Kinshasa, August 13th, 2025 (CPA).-  Five hundred (500) subsidiary judgments enabling the obtaining of birth certificates were granted to children born during the Kamuina Nsapu conflict in Kananga, the main town of the province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to a statement from the National Fund for the Reparations of Victims (Fonarev) consulted on Wednesday. ‘’The FONAREV, in the context of its mission of providing access to justice for victims of conflict-related sexual violence, has carried out a major initiative in Kananga on behalf of 500 children born during the Kamuina Nsapu atrocities,’’ the statement has said. According to the source, this initiative has already resulted in subsidiary judgments, enabling the obtaining of birth certificates and legal recognition for these children. Furthermore, Fonarev has noted that this is a decisive step towards guaranteeing their fundamental rights, facilitating their access to education, health and protection, and offering them a future marked by dignity and justice. The source has also reported that the process is continuing and will be gradually extended to all provinces of the country. These steps have been taken by the National Fund for the Reparation of Victims of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence and Victims of Crimes against Peace and Security of Humanity (Fonarev). This public institution is active in Kananga, main city of Kasai-Central, particularly through training and conferences, to improve support for victims of conflict-related sexual violence. The ‘Kamuina Nsapu’ conflict is a conflict over traditional power that shook the region of Kasai in central DRC between 2016 and 2017 claiming several victims. ACP/
