Kinshasa: a low honey production announced due to a natural phenomenon

Kinshasa, September 6th, 2026 (CPA).- A low honey production has been announced for this year due to the natural phenomenon known as ‘El Niño’, a former coordinator of a community development support association in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has revealed on Sunday to CPA.

“As a result of the natural phenomenon El Niño, linked to climate change, there have not been enough flowers this year, which will lead to a drop in honey production,” has declared Kambale Milonde, a community activist and former coordinator of the Congolese Association for Community Development Support (Acadec). According to him, the El Niño phenomenon (which is characterized by an abnormally warm surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean) has led to severe drought in some parts of the country’s provinces and heavy rainfall in others, and this interrupts the flowering cycle of plants.

“There aren’t flowers everywhere in DRC. In the east, the north and the south – in short, there hasn’t been abundant flowering – which will affect honey production. Despite this natural reality, there will still be some production, but it will be low,” has explained Mr Milonde. Founded in 2009, Acadec has always played an active role, alongside beekeepers from the Bateke Plateau, in marking World Bee Day, which was established by the UN in 2018 and is celebrated in May of each year.
