Kinshasa: Impounding of abandoned vehicles in the municipality of Kasa-Vubu

Kinshasa, July 10th, 2025 (CPA). – Abandoned or parked vehicles obstructing traffic on the main roads of the municipality of Kasa-Vubu, in the center of Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (CPA), were impounded on Thursday after an evacuation operation carried out by a partner of the town hall.

‘We are supporting the city of Kinshasa through the Ministry of the Interior, which had asked the city’s partners to assist the municipalities by seizing all abandoned vehicles and wrecks that are causing insecurity on the one hand and obstructing traffic on the other,’ said Lucien Izombo, head of a vehicle impound service. ‘In accordance with Edict 003, owners of impounded vehicles have 30 days to retrieve them upon payment of the legal fines and will sign a commitment from certifying that they will never again leave their vehicles on public roads,’ he added.  After this period, Mr Izombo continued, the law provides for a procedure to be followed, according to which vehicles that are not suitable for use on the roads will be destroyed.

‘The main concern is to clear the streets and avenues of the municipality of Kasa-Vubu to allow free movement,’ he said. He noted that illegal garages continue to proliferate on the main roads of Kasa-Vubu despite the ban by the municipality and the Kinshasa City Council. « The mechanics who own the illegal garages are stubbornly continuing their activities despite the formal notice aimed at combating the proliferation of these garages, which occupy public space in an anarchic manner. Often located on streets, avenues and the edges of main roads, they contribute to congestion and prevent peaceful citizens from circulating. As the law remains in force, we are clearing them out without further ado, » he concluded.
