Kinshasa: launch of medical coverage for high blood pressure and diabetes

Kinshasa, September 30th, 2025 (CPA).- An initiative to provide free healthcare to vulnerable families to combat high blood pressure and diabetes, often linked to dietary habits and living conditions, was launched on Tuesday during a ceremony at a clinic in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “This is an initiative we have taken to bring our care to even the most disadvantaged. We are helping vulnerable families. We are fighting high blood pressure, diabetes, and several other diseases,” said Dr. Jean-Paul Mafimbo, head of the Ave Maria clinic.

According to him, this initiative does not stop here, but is spreading throughout the capital and the country thanks to the efforts of this youth association for awareness and integral development, which is at the heart of this initiative. “We offer quality care to everyone, especially to members of our non-profit organization. Anyone who pays a flat fee, while they are sick, or their children, or other members of their families, can go to different hospitals,” he added.

According to this doctor, this initiative takes into account high blood pressure and diabetes. “Sometimes the problems we have in our societies and workplaces contribute to influencing our health. Diabetes is a disease of civilization linked to diet and sometimes also to heredity,” he said.  “This disease also affects us due to certain lifestyle factors: overeating, snacking at all hours. With everything we find on the market, especially sweets, we have found that poor eating habits also contribute to influencing how our bodies function and lead to diabetes,” concluded Mr. Mafimbo.
