Kwilu: the students of a higher education institution sensitised to STIs and HIV in Bandundu

Bandundu, April 3rd, 2025 (CPA) – An academic session on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS has been organised on Wednesday for students at the Higher Technical Medical Institute in Bandundu (ISTM), the provincial main town of Kwilu, in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

‘The aim of this activity is to equip the students with knowledge that will enable them to understand the different channels of transmission of STIs and HIV/AIDS’, has declared Laurette Leke, Head of Section at ISTM/Bandundu. ‘The practice of unprotected sex before marriage is a risk that exposes people to STIs and HIV/AIDS and can compromise human lives’, she has added.

Ms Leke has, on this occasion, invited them to abstain and to use condoms correctly during occasional sexual intercourse, before encouraging them to undergo voluntary screening. The STIs are sexually transmitted infections caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites. They have repercussions on health. It is essential to prevent and detect them.
