Kinshasa, April 26th, 2026 (CPA). – The president of DRC-US Friendship Group in the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the deputy Joseph Bangakya, has condemned on Sunday the attack carried out on Saturday evening during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, in a press release received by CPA. The elected representative from Rungu, in Haut-Uele province in the north-east of the country, said he has offered “his full solidarity and sympathy” to “US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and all those present at the Correspondents’ Dinner”. As a reminder, the President and his wife have been evacuated from a gala dinner following gunfire. The heavily armed gunman has been arrested. In Washington (United States), the annual White House Correspondents’ Gala began on Saturday April 25th. Suddenly, a volley of gunshots has rang out at the back of the hall. Trump, engrossed in a mentalist’s act, did not move. It was his wife, Melania, who has reacted first. Events then unfolded very quickly: Vice-President J.D. Vance has been evacuated first by the Secret Service agents in black. The Donald Trump’s bodyguards have formed a protective shield around him before taking him to safety themselves. On the red carpet at the entrance to the Hilton hotel, guests in evening dress panicked, and security personnel drew their weapons. Security services stepped over the chairs and tables under which the guests had taken refuge. They have escorted Donald Trump’s advisers and cabinet members out.
