UN: adoption of a resolution to protect children from conflict in the digital age

Kinshasa, October 21st, 2026 (CPA). –The United Nations (UN) Security Council has unanimously adopted on Wednesday the resolution 2832 (2026), aiming to protect children affected by armed conflict from violations and abuses committed, facilitated or amplified by digital technologies, international media have reported.

“The resolution adopted today marks an important step towards for better responding to the needs of boys and girls, in particular by strengthening efforts to ensure their safety and well-being in an increasingly digital world, and by ensuring that every child can benefit from the opportunities offered by digital technology without being exposed to harm,” has declared Vanessa Frazier, Special Representative of the UN General Secretary for Children and Armed Conflict. “I would like to thank the members of the Security Council and the international community for their continued commitment and support on the issue of children affected by armed conflict,” she has added. Tabled by Greece and supported by 93 co-sponsors, the text calls on Member States to take protective measures at national and regional levels. The resolution, 2832 (2026), is the fifteenth devoted by the Council to the issue of children and armed conflict.

The text also encourages United Nations agencies to gather information on the risks and benefits of digital technologies for the protection of children affected by armed conflict, as well as to identify lessons learnt and emerging best practices. “This resolution comes at a crucial time, when the true extent of the risks associated with the use of these technologies remains to be established. It echoes the UN General Secretary’s calls for a safer online environment for children,” Vanessa Frazier has emphasised.

The UN representative has also emphasised the need to adapt the mandate on children and armed conflict to address emerging risks. “By uniting around this shared priority, the members of the Council are demonstrating that, even in the most difficult circumstances, the protection of children remains a cause capable of inspiring collective action and delivering concrete results on the ground,” she has concluded.
