Kinshasa, June 25th, 2021 (CPA).- The first vice-president of the National Assembly, Jean-Marc Kabund-a-Kabund pleaded for the vaccination of populations against the COVID-19 pandemic, during the 40th session of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific / European Union (CPA / EU) Joint Parliamentary Assembly, organized on Thursday, by videoconference in Luxembourg, the seat of the European Union.
Jean-Marc Kabund-a-Kabund, who sits on behalf of the Congolese Parliament, said vaccination is the only way to stop the large-scale spread of the pandemic.
“Barrier measures alone are not enough. In the absence of a suitable therapy, the vaccine is currently the best indicated route to halt large-scale spread. It is therefore crucial that it be available and accessible to all countries, ”he insisted.
While stressing that this session of the CPA / EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly is taking place in a particularly difficult global health context, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the First Vice-President of the National Assembly informed that the DRC is experiencing a worrying health situation, mainly due to the resurgence of this pandemic, with the 3rd wave of the Indian and South African variant.
Jean-Marc Kabund-a-Kabund also presented to the CPA-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly the dramatic situation that occurred on May 22ndin Goma, North Kivu, with the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano, followed by intense seismic activity, the most important of which was magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale.
According to the first vice-president of the National Assembly, this natural disaster sowed confusion and desolation among the population causing several loss of human life and extensive damage.
« The government is actively working to assist the affected populations, » he reassured, adding that a chain of solidarity has developed in favor of the victims of Goma.
To this end, Jean-Marc Kabund-a-Kabund welcomed, on behalf of the deputies members of the delegation of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OE.CPA) of the DRC, to the assistance given to the victims of this natural disaster by friendly countries in the region and elsewhere.He also referred to the tragedy experienced by the population of the eastern part of the DRC following the activities of various armed groups.
According to him, it is thanks to the state of siege decreed by the Head of State Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and the installation of military governors in Goma and Ituri, that we are gradually witnessing the resumption by the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), from a few localities formerly under the control of negative forces.
