Kinshasa, May 6th, 2021 (CPA).– Belgian coach Hugo Broos, selected as coach of the Leopards A of DR Congo, refused to engage with the Congolese Federation of Association Football (FECOFA) within hours of finalizing his contract, indicate corroborating sources close to the Federation.
According to these sources, Hugo Broos and the executive committee of FECOFA had agreed, on Tuesday May 4th in the day after their last talks, so that the Belgian technician could take the head of the technical staff of Leopards A in anticipation of the World Cup qualifiers, Qatar 2022.
As FECOFA executive committee was about to announce to the Congolese people the recruitment of the Belgian technician on Wednesday morning, Hugo Broos signaled his change of mind by opting for South Africa.
Hugo Broos, a former Belgian international turned coach
Hogo Broos, 70, is a former Belgian international footballer who became a coach 34 years ago. He made his debut as a coach at RWD Molenbeek of the Belgian division II championship and took charge of the technical staff of Bruges in 1991 with which he won two Belgian cups and two titles, before taking leave of the club in 1997.
In 2002, he moved to RSC Anderlecht where he was dismissed for poor results. KRC Genk recruited him in 2008 and moved to Turkey’s Trabzonspor in June 2009 where he was sacked on November 23rd, 2009 for poor results. In August 2011, Hugo Broos tried his luck at Al-Jazeera Club in the United Arab Emirates and became deputy to his compatriot Franky Vercauteren, who had himself been his deputy in Anderlecht a few years before.
In July 2014, he became head coach of JS Kabylie d’Algerie and resigned 2 months later following a misunderstanding with the club president. In mid-November 2014, Broos was hired by another Algerian club, NA Hussein-Dey, which thanked him on February 15th, 2015 for insufficient results, the club having finished penultimate in the Algerian championship.
He found himself in Cameroon in early 2016 as a coach and succeeded, on February 5th, 2017, in winning the African Cup of Nations (CAN) with the Indomitable Lions against Egypt (2-1), before becoming March 1st, 2018, sports director of KV Ostende / Belgium. ACP /
