A call for the appropriation of a waste transformation project launched in Kinshasa

Kinshasa, November 20th, 2025 (CPA). – A call for the appropriation of the ‘Bongola fulu (Transforming waste)’ project has been launched on Thursday to the inhabitants of the municipality of Masina, in the eastern part of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following a workshop organised from November 19th to 20th, 2025, in this municipality. ‘We call on the residents of Masina to embrace this project. With this project, the municipality will become cleaner. We are working for the people and with the people. One hand alone cannot pick up a pile of waste. We must all contribute to the advancement of our municipality,’ has declared Joseph Shiku, burgomaster of Masina. Mr Shiku has explained that this project, designed for the well-being of the people of Masina, aims the transformation of waste into useful resources. ‘During these two days, we have joined our efforts for our municipality. The results of these meetings will only be visible thanks to the active participation of the entire population, in particular the direct beneficiaries, namely the markets and agricultural sites operated by market gardeners,’ he has said, before urging the population not to neglect waste, as it can become useful. For his part, Mr David Bugeme, Director of the African Agricultural Leadership Institute (AALI), has indicated that this project is an initiative aimed to transform the waste into resources with added value. ‘The waste, when not properly managed, becomes a hazard, but when properly recycled, it becomes a valuable resource for society. With this project, more than 250 young people and women will be involved in the production and sale of compost, as well as in the creation of micro-enterprises,’ he has suggested. According to him, Bongola Fulu is not just a project, but a concrete initiative whose results will be visible after a year. ‘We have chosen Masina as a pilot municipality, before extending the project to other municipalities to help make Kinshasa clean,’ he has concluded. The ‘Bongola Fulu (Transforming Waste)’ project contributes to the sanitation efforts already undertaken by the municipality of Masina by transforming organic waste to improve vegetable production in general and youth employment in particular.
