“African radiology is capable of addressing the challenges facing our countries” (SRAF President)

Kinshasa, June 14^th, 2026 (CPA). – Radiology is capable of addressing the healthcare challenges facing African countries, the President of the Francophone African Society of Radiology (SRAF) said on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Congress of the Congolese Society of Radiology (SOCORAD) held in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). « I would first like to pay tribute to all African and international radiologists who contributed to the success of this edition. Speakers, commentators, trainers, researchers and technicians, your expertise has given these sessions exceptional value. Thanks to you, African radiology has demonstrated that it is capable of innovating, producing knowledge and responding to the challenges facing our countries, » said Jacques Aimé Bazeboso, incoming President of SRAF. « When the lights go out on this edition, what will remain is greater than the conferences and workshops. There will remain a stronger community, new collaborations, lasting friendships and a shared conviction that Africa can become a major player in medical imaging innovation, » he added.
The incoming SRAF President noted that for three days, Kinshasa had become the African capital of medical imaging, where knowledge circulated, experiences were shared, generations met and the future of the discipline was shaped in the presence of experts. For his part, outgoing SRAF President Dr. Régis Moyikoua explained the significance of the Francophone Africa congress. « This second edition continues a tradition of excellence and reflects the growing maturity of our scientific communities. Conferences, workshops and scientific presentations have demonstrated the vitality of our discipline and the ability of our countries to build a dynamic, modern and forward-looking African radiology community, » he said.
According to him, for more than two decades, the Francophone Radiology Days have served as a privileged platform for continuing education, experience sharing and closer cooperation among radiologists across the African continent.
“Interventional radiology is truly the future of medical imaging”
Professor of medical imaging Dr. Gertrude Luyeye emphasized that interventional radiology represents the future of medical imaging. « This year, we wanted to place particular emphasis on interventional imaging because, unlike conventional surgery, which is invasive and requires opening the patient’s body, the radiologist has the unique ability to access internal organs without performing such procedures. This is what we call interventional imaging. Interventional radiology is truly the future of medical imaging, » she explained. Reflecting on the proceedings of the congress, she added: « Over these three days, our objective was to reflect on the role that medical imaging, a major pillar of patient care, must play in achieving universal health coverage, and on how patients should be diagnosed and managed within this medical imaging framework. » The closing ceremony was marked by the Democratic Republic of the Congo assuming the presidency of SRAF, represented by Professor Jacques Aimé Bazeboso, as well as the symbolic presentation of awards to participants.
The 2nd SOCORAD Congress, held jointly with the 21st Francophone African Radiology Days from June 11^th to 13^th, was organized under the theme: « Medical Imaging at the Heart of Medical Specialties in the Era of Technological Innovation and Universal Health Coverage. » The meeting provided a strategic opportunity to consolidate scientific progress, stimulate technological innovation and strengthen regional integration in the field of medical imaging.
