Agreement between the United States and Russia to hold a bilateral summit

Kinshasa, August 7th, 2025 (CPA).- The Russian president’s diplomatic adviser has announced on Thursday that an agreement in principle had been reached between his country and the United States to hold a bilateral summit in the coming days, adding that preparations have already begun, according to international media reports. ‘At the suggestion of the American side, an agreement in principle has been reached to hold a bilateral summit in the coming days,’ has declared Yuri Ushakov, diplomatic adviser to the Russian president.  ‘We are now beginning to work out the details with our American colleagues,’ he has added. He has also specified that the meeting could take place next week and that a location had been agreed in principle between the two parties. That location could be the United Arab Emirates. ‘We have many friends who are ready to help us organise this type of event. One of them is the President of the United Arab Emirates. I think we will decide, but it would be one of the appropriate locations,’ he has said. Furthermore, Russia has not yet however responded to the American idea of a three-way meeting between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.  The Russian president has believed that the conditions for a face-to-face meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky are not in place, while his Ukrainian counterpart insists on such a summit.  ‘I have nothing against it in general, it is possible, but certain conditions must be met for this to happen. Unfortunately, we are still far from these conditions,’ Vladimir Putin has insisted. The American president had mentioned a meeting with Vladimir Putin in the very near future. It should be noted that the last face-to-face meeting between the two leaders has taken place in 2019 on the side-lines of a G20 summit in Japan. This renewed diplomatic activity comes one day before the expiry of a US ultimatum to Russia to end the conflict that has been on-going since early 2022. ACP/
