Kinshasa, August 10th, 2025 (CPA).- The main European leaders have welcomed on Sunday the US President Donald Trump’s initiative to organise the US-Russia summit scheduled for August 15th in Alaska to stop the massacre in Ukraine, international media have reported. ‘We welcome the President Trump’s work to stop the massacre in Ukraine,’ the European leaders have said. ‘We are ready to support these efforts diplomatically and by maintaining our substantial military and financial support for Ukraine, as well as by maintaining and imposing restrictive measures against the Russian Federation,’ they have added.
According to them, the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be charted without Ukraine, reiterating their commitment to the principle that international borders should not be changed by force and specifying that the current line of contact (front line) should be the starting point for negotiations. For his part, the Ukrainian president has welcomed and fully supported the joint statement by European leaders to achieve peace while protecting the interests of his country and Europe.
It should be noted that the signatories of this joint statement are: French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alex Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who have decided to present a united front alongside Volodymyr Zelensky.
‘The future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians.’
It should be noted that the message from the European allies is published five days before the meeting, which is expected to take place without the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. However, the White House is considering calling on the Ukrainian president to Alaska, according to sources. ‘Any decision taken against us, any decision taken without Ukraine would be a decision against peace. The Ukrainians will not abandon their land to the occupiers,’ has warned Mr Zelensky. For his part, Emmanuel Macron, after talks with Volodymyr Zelensky, Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer, has declared that ‘the future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians who have been fighting for their freedom and security for more than three years now.’ ‘We remain determined to support Ukraine, working in a spirit of unity and building on the work undertaken within the coalition of the willing,’ he has added, referring to Western countries ready to help secure Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.
