Bas-Uele: the rehabilitation of a bridge on National Road 25 praised by an NGO

Kisangani, April 28th, 2026 (CPA).- The rehabilitation of the Bomokandi Bridge, 7 kilometres from the town of Dingila in Bas-Uele province, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on National Road 25 (RN25), has been praised by a member of the local civil society. “For years, this bridge was considered an open grave. We transported our goods at the risk of our lives, and seeing a lorry get stuck in the mud or nearly overturn was part of our daily routine. The action taken by the Mokeni government is to be praised,» has declared Urbain Mwenye, provincial president of the Coalition of NGOs for Forest Governance and Sustainable Development (COGOFOD) in Bas-Uele, referring to the difficulties faced by users.

“Today, thanks to the involvement of the head of the Bas-Uele provincial executive, this calvary is over. This bridge represents for us much more than just an infrastructure: it is the return of hope and of economic life between the towns of Isiro and Buta,” he has added. According to the source, this strategic structure, long considered a bottleneck, was hampering trade and exposing users to numerous risks, particularly transporters and farmers unable to deliver their products. “The rehabilitation of the Bomokandi Bridge is now contributing to the smooth flow of traffic on the RN25 and the revival of economic activity in the Bambesa territory, with a significant improvement in the movement of goods and a reduction in transport costs!” he has exclaimed. This achievement is part of the Bas-Uele provincial government’s policy aiming to open up the province through the modernisation of basic infrastructure, with a view to support a sustainable and inclusive development.
