Central Kasai: call to protect reforested sites in Kananga

Kananga, September 27th, 2026 (CPA).- A call to protect reforested sites was issued Sunday to the urban authorities of Kananga, Central Kasai, in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), by the organization known as “Oeuvres sociales de reclassement” (ORS), during the closing of its ordinary general assembly, its coordinator said. “We are calling on the support of the urban authorities and customary chiefs to protect more than eighty (80) hectares of reforested sites that are being illegally occupied by individuals from various backgrounds,” said Chantal Mbuyi.

“On our own, we cannot cope with this recurring phenomenon,” she explained to participants, in view of the challenges posed by climate change. For Ms. Mbuyi, who is also Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization, the regeneration of certain endangered species, such as the “Mbelebele” fruit, which is used to make jams and other products, is one of the results of the reforestation activities.

Simon Luboya, Head of the Single Division at Kananga City Hall, assured the participants, on behalf of the urban authorities, of his administration’s support in curbing this problem.
