Kinshasa, March 5th, 2026 (CPA).- The Italian Minister in charge of Defence has announced on Thursday the sending, in the coming days, together with other European countries, of naval resources to defend Cyprus after an attack by Iranian drones against a British base, international media have informed. ‘That is why, together with Spain, France and the Netherlands, we will be sending naval assets to protect Cyprus in the coming days,’ has declared Guido Crosetto, Italian Minister in charge of Defence.
For its part, the Spanish Ministry in charge of Defence has announced that it would send a frigate to Cyprus for ‘protection’ missions following a drone attack on a British military base last Monday. ‘The frigate Cristóbal Colón (Christopher Columbus) will carry out protection and air defence missions and will assist in the evacuation of civilian personnel,’ has indicated the Spanish Ministry in charge of Defence in a statement.
It will accompany the French aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaulle and other Greek navy vessels. The announcement comes at a time of tension with the United States over its refusal to allow it to use Spanish bases against Iran in a war that Madrid considers illegal.
