Kinshasa, November 6th, 2025 (CPA).- The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to face an ecological war causing a profound ecocide in its eastern part, President Felix Tshisekedi has indicated on Thursday in his speech on the first day of the global conference on climate change in Belem, Brazil. “My country is also a victim of an ecological war, in that it is destroying our forests, our protected areas, our parks, etc.,” has declared the Congolese head of state, the 10th speaker at this inaugural session of COP30. “My country therefore fully understands the scope of the initiative by Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa to recognize ecocide as an autonomous international crime,” he has added. He has shared with the audience the actions taken so far by his government as a contribution to the fight against climate change and the preservation of the global ecosystem, in addition to the ecological assets that make DRC a country that offers solutions to environmental threats. “The Democratic Republic of Congo is a country that offers solutions thanks to its great environmental heritage. We have a country rich in carbon and water biodiversity with forests,” he has said, adding that DRC is particularly committed to “strengthening the rights of local populations and organizing a circular economy based on the forest and not against the forest.” The Democratic Republic of Congo is thus “one of the few countries in the world to have already devoted more than 30% of its territory to conservation,” President Tshisekedi has maintained.
