Kinshasa, June 3rd, 2026 (CPA).- The bicycle has been considered as a physical activity that improves blood circulation and respiratory endurance, during a sensitization day on Wednesday by a doctor in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, on the side-lines of the World Bicycle Day, celebrated on June 3rd of each year.
“Cycling is a comprehensive physical activity that combines health and practicality; it strengthens the heart muscles, improves blood circulation and builds respiratory endurance,” has declared Victorine Musetu, a general practitioner at the “Santé de Fer” (Iron Health) health centre. “As a low-impact sport, it protects the joints whilst toning the muscles (thighs, buttocks, and abdominals) and reducing daily stress; it regulates blood pressure, helps control cholesterol and significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes,” she has added.
According to Ms Musetu, it is an excellent way to burn calories and maintain a healthy weight; unlike running, cycling is a low-impact sport, ideal for knee and hip health whilst promoting venous return and combating heavy legs, as pedalling stimulates the production of endorphins (happiness hormones), which reduces anxiety and acts as a natural antidepressant; it also helps clear the mind and boost concentration.
“Cycling boosts the metabolism and promotes fat burning, whilst strengthening the immune system and helping to alleviate anxiety and improve mood,” she has concluded. Also the coordinator of the NGO Nouvelle Alliance, this association focuses on social initiatives, ranging from sensitization of child health to educating young people about entrepreneurship.
