Demolition of houses on public utility rights-of-way announced in Kinshasa

Kinshasa, August 4th, 2026 (CPA).– The demolition of houses built on land belonging to the National Electricity Company (SNEL) has been announced on Tuesday by the Provincial Minister in charge of the Environment during an inspection visit he has made to Mont-Ngafula, a municipality in the west of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to a press release.

“During the visit, Provincial Minister Leon Mulumba has marked the houses in question, announcing that they would be demolished to clear the Snel right-of-way,” it is read in the press release from the Mont-Ngafula municipal council. Provincial Minister Mulumba has been accompanied by the burgomaster of Mont-Ngafula, Severin Lumbu, and a delegation from Snel, the document has noted. According to the same source, the plots in question have been reportedly sold by a former traditional chief, Nsimba Nkipe.

“The buyers claim to hold deeds of sale signed by him,” the document has added. The statement has indicated that several landowners have expressed concerns about this decision, citing the financial losses they risk incurring as well as the lack of a rehousing solution.
