Kalemie, August 4th, 2026 (CPA).– As part of an empowerment initiative, displaced women and girls at the Kikongo site in Kalemie, Tanganyika province, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, supported by the Mwanamke Imara project, have harvested their first crop of a large quantity of vegetables, CPA has reported on Tuesday.
“The Mwanamke Imara project forms part of the socio-economic empowerment of displaced women and girls at the Kikongo site in Katanika,” has declared Ms Seraphine Kamona Fatuma, provincial head of the Gender, Family and Children’s Division in Tanganyika. Ms Seraphine Kamona has praised the initiative and courage of these women and girls in Kikongo, who have taken up market gardening to protect themselves from attempts at sexual violence driven by the need for money.
“We have ploughed a two-hectare field to provide for ourselves thanks to the Mwanamke Imara project; we have sown various vegetables there during this dry season, and we have just harvested our first large crop of vegetables. We are going to sell this to consumers in Kalemie, as there is a shortage of vegetables in the town’s markets,” has said Ms Jacqueline Amunazwa, one of the displaced women supported by this project at the Kikongo site.
