Kinshasa, August 16th, 2026 (CPA). – More than four thousand (4,000) shelters have been built for displaced communities in Kalemie, Tanganyika province, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), by the National Fund for Reparations for Victims of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (Fonarev), according to a press release consulted on Saturday by CPA.
“To provide them with more dignified living conditions, Fonarev has already built more than 4,000 shelters for displaced communities in Kalemie and the surrounding area,” it is read in the press release from the National Fund for Reparations for Victims of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence and Victims of Crimes Against Peace and Human Security. According to the source, Fonarev’s senior management is continuing its outreach mission in Kalemie, working with thousands of displaced people, particularly in Nord-Kivu and Sud-Kivu (in the east of the country), who have been forced to flee their homes due to the conflicts. Furthermore, the document has revealed that at the sites of Gare Makala, Katanika 2, Eliya and Mushaba, Fonarev has met with these communities and carried out the symbolic handover of shelters and food supplies, whilst also marking the launching of the Provisional Emergency Measures (MPU).
Furthermore, the same source has indicated that “through these measures, Fonarev plans, in particular, to provide medical care, psychological support, financial assistance and learning opportunities for children”. “An emergency response to restore the victims’ dignity and gradually guide them towards sustainable solutions,” the source has concluded. Fonarev has a national mandate to translate the recognition of damages into concrete actions, with reparations designed for the victims, the families and the affected communities. ACP/
