Kinshasa, September 2nd, 2025 (CPA). – 1,554 (one thousand five hundred and fifty-four) cases of cholera have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 34th epidemiological week (August 18th to 23rd), CPA has learned on Tuesday from a press release from the Ministry in charge of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare.
‘In the 34th week (August 18th to 23rd), 1,554 cases of cholera have been recorded, a slight decrease compared to the previous week. Fifteen provinces remain in epidemic mode, with a particularly high mortality rate in certain areas, notably the province of Équateur (16%),’ it is read. ‘The vaccination campaigns carried out in Kinshasa have produced good results. Three million additional doses of cholera vaccine are expected to continue and expand vaccination coverage,’ the source has added.
According to the source, the next steps after vaccination are to intensify response actions in provinces with high mortality rates, develop a circular aimed at implementing hand washing and hygiene measures in schools, and collaborate with the Ministry in charge of Education to raise awareness in schools about good hygiene practices and prevent disease transmission as the new school year begins. Regarding the Mpox situation in DRC, the source has indicated that in the 33rd week of the year (August 11th to 16th), 596 cases have been recorded, and a decrease from the previous week.
‘The upcoming arrival of an additional million doses of the Japanese LC16M8 vaccine will bring the total stock to 3 million doses, strengthening vaccination capacity, and peer participation in contact tracing and case management remains essential to contain the spread,’ the statement has emphasized. It is noted that the Ministry in charge of Health is working with partners and that active community participation remains an essential lever for strengthening the response to epidemics in the country.
