A meeting between Zelensky and the European authorities scheduled for Thursday in Paris

Kinshasa, September 2nd, 2025 (CPA). – The Ukrainian president is to meet the President of the European Commission, the General Secretary of NATO and the German, French and British leaders on Thursday for discussions on ‘security guarantees for Ukraine’, the international media have reported.

‘The discussions will be co-chaired by the French head of state Emmanuel Macron and the British prime minister Keir Starmer, and will also include the German chancellor Friedrich Merz. They will focus on security guarantees for Ukraine, which has been facing a Russian invasion since 2022’, has announced Mykhaïlo Podoliak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency.

According to the same sources, Macron and Starmer, at the head of a ‘coalition of the volunteers’ – around thirty mainly European countries supporting Ukraine – are seeking to present a solid European offer to protect Ukrainians from a possible future Russian attack, should a peace agreement be reached.

Ukraine, which believes that the Russians will try to invade again even if a way out of the war is found, is calling for a European peacekeeping force and Nato-style defence guarantees if it does not consider joining the Alliance.  Russia, which sees the expansion of the Atlantic Alliance on its borders as one of the ‘root causes’ of the current conflict, categorically rejects most of these scenarios and wants its demands to be taken into account.
