DRC: Ten years after the bankruptcy of a bank, an activist calls on the authorities

Kinshasa, February 15th, 2026 (CPA). Ten years after the closure of the International Bank for Africa in Congo (BIAC), an activist has called on the authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to take action to ensure the repayment of large sums of money deposited in this institution, according to his account X consulted on Saturday by CPA. ‘Ten years later (2016), BIAC has still not yet reimbursed the customers who had deposited large sums in this bank. Promise after promise. This bank has ruined many of its former customers,’ it is read on the X account of Jean-Claude Katende, president of the African Human Rights Association. According to the same source, this activist has also called on the Congolese authorities, questioning on the measures taken by the government and the Central Bank of Congo (BCC) to speed up the settlement of the case. ‘In the meantime, what are the government and the Central Bank of Congo doing to push for a solution? Ten years is too long,’ the source has maintained. BIAC was one of the commercial banks operating in Lumumba’s country before ceasing its activities in 2016 due to financial difficulties, the source has informed, concluding that since then, the issue of customer reimbursement has remained a sensitive subject in the Congolese banking sector.
