DRC: the Garamba National Park receivesrenomination by UNESCO

Kinshasa, July 30th, 2026 (CPA). – The re-inscription of Garamba National Park,

located in Haut-Uele province in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been approved by the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and  Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), according to a press release consulted on Thursday by CPA. “The Committee has also approved the re-inscription of Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which means that the value of the site, already inscribed, now meets new criteria, justifying a re-examination,” it is read. “This major decision attests that the outstanding universal value of this Congolese natural site now meets new scientific and ecological criteria, thereby offering thisjewel of biodiversity considerably greater international recognition,” the source has continued. Beyond this success for DRC, this international session has consecrated the inscription of 25 new sites (19 cultural, 5 natural and 1 mixed), bringing the World Heritage List to a total of 1,273 properties spread across 173 countries. Alongside these celebrations, the Committee has also inscribed six sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger, in order to mobilise the internationalcommunity in the face of the urgent threats they face.According to the UNESCO press release, the entire set of decisions taken at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea, has beenadopted by consensus, in keeping with the spirit of dialogue enshrined in the 1972 Convention. This now guarantees Garamba Park and the other properties thehighest level of international protection.
