Kinshasa, August 19th 2025 (CPA) .– The challenges faced by women photographers and their determination to advance their profession in an often hostile environment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been highlighted by Divine Didi Law’s, a professional photographer, during a discussion on Tuesday with CPA.
‘Being a professional female photographer in DRC often means facing recurring prejudices. Many people think that this profession is reserved for men, especially in male-dominated contexts such as concerts, large-scale events or certain political circles,’ has declared Divine Didi, a Congolese professional photographer speaking on the side-lines of International Photography Day. ‘There is sometimes a lack of professional consideration. Some clients hesitate to trust a female photographer for serious and profitable contracts, especially in areas considered to be at risk.
The issue of safety is also a major concern, especially at public events or when working alone in certain sensitive areas,’ has added Divine Law’s. Despite these obstacles, she has shared her strategy for gaining respect and credibility. « To overcome these difficulties, I set clear boundaries, focusing first and foremost on professionalism. I prioritise the quality of my work, talking about my expertise and surrounding myself with good people. I believe in a passion for photography, which for me is a path to empowerment and freedom, » she has said. She has also appealed to young women interested in photography. ‘I tell them that photography is not just a hobby, but a real voice. If you have the eye, the passion and the courage, you can live from this vocation and leave your mark on your era. Don’t listen to anyone who says it’s not seriously possible, because the art of photography is a profession, a commitment, a form of freedom.
Keep believing in yourselves,’ she has concluded. Passionate by the image and the light, Divine Didi Law’s, based in DRC, specialises in event, portrait and tourism photography. Her goal is to capture the authenticity of emotions, thereby helping to promote the cultural richness of her country.
