DRC-USA: A group of investors commits to the industrial revival of the Congolese mining sector

Kinshasa, September 30th, 2025 (CPA).- American investors representing a combined turnover of more than $500 billion pledged on Monday in New York to support the Democratic Republic of Congo in reviving industrialization and local processing of commercial mining products, according to a statement from the Ministry in charge of Mines seen by the CPA on Tuesday.

On Monday, August 29th, 2025, “the Minister in charge of Mines, Louis Watum Kabamba, presented the opportunities in the mining sector that make the DRC the best destination and an essential setting for the energy transition and technological revolution. A group of investors, representing a combined turnover of more than $500 billion, has committed to supporting industrial recovery and the local processing of Congolese mineral products on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, » the report said.

According to the source, the group of investors wishing to invest in the DRC includes: Glencore ($39.75 billion); Citi ($190.39 billion); Standard Bank ($22 billion); ING ($67 billion); African Development Bank ($240 billion); Ivanhoe Mines ($600 million/year); Traxys ($10 billion/year); Orion Resource Partners ($310 million). Minister Louis Watum, quoted in the press release, shared the DRC’s vision of a country that no longer wants to be confined to the role of a mere supplier of raw materials, but aspires to process its minerals locally, create jobs, and generate real local added value. “It is for this reason that the Congolese government is committed to forging partnerships with global majors to industrialize the mining sector.

This is a new era that will see the DRC’s natural resources being exploited and jobs being created,” said the Minister of Mines, according to the source. Several stakeholders present, it was specified, expressed their willingness to strengthen and solidify their commitments in the DRC, convinced that the country is now ready to take a new step forward in the development of its mining sector. The document indicated that several concrete actions have been defined, namely: in the next two weeks, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be finalized with the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) to institutionalize the partnership; and by the end of October 2025, Kinshasa will host a BCIU follow-up mission for the official signing and launch of preparatory work for the investor support platform; a structured directory of investors and partners will also be set up, classified by type of project and investment capacity. This system, managed via a dynamic monitoring tool, will enable each investor to be directed towards suitable projects, commitments made to be monitored, and a lasting impact on the national economy to be ensured.

Through its participation in the New York conference, the DRC has not only strengthened its image on the international stage, but has also laid the foundations for a new economic dynamic in which its mineral resources will no longer be synonymous with dependence, but rather with inclusive and sustainable growth for the Congolese nation.
