Beni, October 12th, 2026 (CPA).- Eighteen (18) patients have been discharged from the two operational Ebola treatment centres in Beni, in Nord-Kivu, in the east of the Republic of the Congo, over a period of six days from October 5th to 11th, we have learned on Monday from medical sources. “We are delighted to notice today a cumulative total of recovered patients over the week from October 5th to 11th, 2026; we are delighted to announce to the whole community (…) that we have discharged eighteen recovered patients in Beni,” Dr Jeremie Muhindo, medical director of the Beni General Reference Hospital and head of the care unit at the Ebola treatment centre has revealed. According to this healthcare professional, who was speaking on the side-lines of Sunday’s ceremony to present three newly recovered patients, “among the eighteen are four healthcare workers, including one doctor and three nurses”, a way, he has added, “of reminding people that the response teams are working tirelessly to bring this epidemic to an end”. Dr Muhindo Katsavara has, on this occasion, reiterated the call for the public to continue to place their trust in healthcare professionals and to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health centre should they experience symptoms suggestive of Ebola virus disease, for a thorough investigation, and to agree to be isolated, through holistic care, should the disease be confirmed.
From 50% to 30% of the case fatality rate
Dr Muhindo has, moreover, noted a considerable improvement in the case fatality rate, which has fallen from 50% to 30% in this health zone. “Currently, the case fatality rate stands at 29 or even 30%, compared with the 50% rate seen since the outbreak began in Beni; thanks to the efforts of the response teams, the trend is being reversed,” he has explained. He has therefore called for community involvement to ensure that, in the coming days, this case fatality rate falls to below 15%. The first case of the 17th Ebola virus disease has been confirmed in Beni on May 18th, 2026. To date, the Beni health zone has recorded a total of 433 cases and 338 deaths, according to the epidemiological bulletin from the provincial response coordination unit published on October 11th, 2026.
