Election in Ukraine: Russia is concerned about European rearmament for Ukraine

Kinshasa, October 12th, 2026 (CPA): – The Russian Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs has denounced his concern on Monday regarding the ceasefire in Ukraine, regarding Volodymyr Zelensky’s plans to organise elections or to be rearmed by the Europeans, during a press conference in Moscow with his Lebanese counterpart, according to international media. “Volodymyr Zelensky invokes the elections to call for a two-month truce, but seeks in reality to rearm his forces by Europe,” Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, has declared.

In his view, a truce would give Kyiv the time to receive new European weapons. “I do not think he deserves this respite; I do not think we will allow ourselves to be taken in once again by assurances and promises,” he has said. He has condemned the feigned surprise and the willingness to make every public proposal work towards this demand for a truce. Following his talks with his Lebanese counterpart, Youssef Raggi Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs, the Russian minister has reaffirmed his country’s objectives in the war opposing it to Ukraine for the past four years.

“We continue to achieve the objectives of the special military operation. These are well known to everyone; we have never changed them, unlike the U-turns and vacillations of Zelensky and his European masters. We therefore have no accountability to anyone,” the Russian minister has added. Last Sunday, the Ukrainian president had proposed a 60-day ceasefire to organise elections. This announcement followed Trump’s call to choose a new Ukrainian leader capable of reaching an agreement with Russia. For his part, the President of the United States of America had announced on Sunday an energy truce between the two countries, without confirmation from Moscow.

Zelensky had said he was prepared to suspend attacks on Russian refineries in exchange with stopping strikes targeting Ukrainian energy facilities. Furthermore, the Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs has indicated that Russia reaffirms its support for Lebanon, condemning Israeli operations in Lebanon, which he has considered as a violation of international law. He has reaffirmed Russia’s support for the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. This was the second meeting between the two ministers in a month. The two ministers had previously met on September 23rd in New York, on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly.
