Ebola in DRC: 750 recoveries compared with 600 deaths; recoveries outnumber deaths

Kinshasa, July 9th, 2026 (CPA).– 750 (seven hundred and fifty) people have been declared recovered from Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, compared with 600 deaths – a positive outcome in which recoveries outnumber deaths, according to the epidemiological report on the disease reviewed on Thursday by CPA.

“The key epidemiological indicators show that 750 people have recovered from EVD, compared with 600 cumulative deaths, meaning the number of recoveries exceeds the death toll,” it can be read in the report. According to this source, 1,759 cases of EVD have been confirmed in the provinces of Ituri, Nord-Kivu and Sud-Kivu, with an overall case fatality rate of 34.1 per cent. Furthermore, the contact tracing rate is particularly high, reaching 80 per cent. The report also indicates that the extension of surveillance to Tshopo has revealed two confirmed cases in Kisangani, one of which is linked to the Nia-Nia health zone. “

As soon as this signal was detected, operations have been launched in Kisangani to establish and strengthen all pillars of the response, demonstrating an immediate reaction. To date, the number of officially affected provinces remains at three,” the report specifies.

With regard to clinical management, the source notes that the cumulative number of people who have recovered (750) sends a strong signal regarding the effectiveness of the treatments administered.  “Today, once again, five patients from Ituri (from CT Sota, CTE Rwampara, Mongbwalu and Nyakunde) have been declared recovered following negative follow-up tests,” the same source reports.  Finally, it emphasises that the decentralisation of diagnostic capacity enables cases to be detected and confirmed rapidly, including outside the usual areas of transmission, as illustrated by the early identification of the outbreak in Kisangani.
