Ebola in Ituri: Parents Urged to Keep Children Away from High-Risk Areas

Bunia, July 6th, 2026 (CPA). – Parents in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, have been urged to keep their children away from public places and large gatherings during the school holidays in order to reduce the risk of Ebola virus infection. « The current period is particularly difficult because of the Ebola virus disease. We urge parents to keep their children meaningfully occupied during the holidays. They should avoid exposing them to public places, public transport, churches where physical distancing is not always observed, as well as gatherings around football matches, » said Pascal Takaibone, President of the Parents’ Committee of the Sainte Joséphine Bakhita School Complex.

« Parents must also protect themselves because they can unknowingly bring the disease back home. Children are particularly vulnerable, and observing preventive measures is everyone’s responsibility during this holiday period, » he added.

Mr. Takaibone recalled that children are among the groups most vulnerable to the disease, stressing the need for every family to strictly comply with Ebola prevention measures.

He also called on parents to demonstrate civic responsibility in order to help curb the spread of the virus within the community.
