Ebola response: Tracing of potential contacts hampered by ADF killings

Beni, June 14th, 2026 (CPA). – The tracing of potential contacts of Ebola patients has become increasingly difficult in the Ngadi health area of Beni City, North Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), due to killings carried out by ADF jihadists affiliated with the Islamic State group, according to health sources interviewed on Saturday. « The population has fled, and we are unable to monitor them in the host families where they have sought refuge in the city. Fortunately, we have not yet recorded any contact cases or suspected cases. We are continuing to raise awareness among the few residents who remain here, urging them to observe preventive measures and to report immediately to the hospital in case of high fever so that they can receive treatment and improve their chances of recovery. At present, the only patients coming to the health center are malaria sufferers and soldiers seeking treatment for wounds, and we are monitoring them very closely, » explained Asnath Kavira Sivaminya, head nurse at the Ngadi Health Centre. The Ngadi neighborhood, located on the Beni–Mavivi road north of Beni City along National Road No. 4, was targeted by Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists during the night of May 30th–31st, when six civilians and one soldier were killed in Beni City, while seven other civilians were brutally murdered in Vemba locality in Beni Territory. At the Ngadi Health Centre, only minimum services have been maintained since Monday, June 8th, 2026.

« We are currently operating with minimum services because of fear. Although the military is securing the facility, many health workers, especially women, are reluctant to report for duty, » the head nurse added, calling for stronger security measures to push back the attackers and enable displaced residents to return home. Since the ADF attack on a Pygmy camp, residents of the Ngadi neighborhood have been making daily shuttle movements to Beni city Centre, where they spend the night before returning in the morning.
