Kinshasa, February 11th, 2026 (CPA). – The price per tonne of processed scrap metal, an export product of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has decreased by 2.02% internationally, trading at USD 744.61 on February 9th, 2026, compared to USD 760.01 the previous week, according to the Foreign Trade Ministry’s price lists consulted on Wednesday by CPA. ‘The price per tonne of processed scrap metal experiences a decrease on the international market during the week of February 9th to 14th, 2026. The tonne being sold at 744.61 US dollars compared to 760.01 US Dollars the previous week, thus a decrease of 2.02%,’ it is read.
The increase, the decrease and the stability of prices for marketable mining, agricultural and forestry products, the document has indicated, are consequences of supply and demand on international markets, as well as the supply chain. These fluctuations have a direct impact on the Congolese economy, which is heavily dependent on raw material exports, particularly in the mining sector. The world’s production of processed scrap metal varies depending on the metal. China, India and the United States are major sources of copper ingots and copper anodes, while Australia and China are key countries for zinc. The origin of scrap metal also depends on processing, with countries such as India (copper) and Sweden (lead) producing and exporting anodes, in addition to countries with deposits or reserves. It should also be noted that processed scrap metal is relatively cheap and is specifically designed to corrode in place of the more expensive metal parts of our ships. It is usually made of zinc, but can also be made from magnesium or a special aluminium alloy.
