Kasumbalesa: the importers plead for exemption of corn flour

Kasumbalesa, January 22nd, 2026 (CPA). – The importers’ committee of the town of Kasumbalesa, in Haut-Katanga province in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has pleaded on Thursday for the exemption of corn flour, a measure suspended by the Congolese government, during a meeting with the mayor. ‘More than 100 lorries are currently blocked at customs since the government has lifted the exemption on corn flour. This threatens the commercialisation of this essential product and this blockage is plunging economic operators into a difficult situation, with the risk of considerable financial losses,’ has declared Neville Ntumba, president of the Importers Committee of Kasumbalesa. Mayor Andre Kampapa has praised the efforts of the operators and has asked them to be patient, before announcing that appropriate solutions would be taken imminently, after a report had been submitted to the provincial level.
