Kinshasa, June 18th, 2026 (CPA).- The price of a jersey (official shirt) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national football team, the Leopards, imported from Thailand, has increased by 20% on markets in Kinshasa, rising from CDF 22,500 to CDF 27,000, or about USD 12, CPA observed on Thursday during a mini-survey. “One jersey of the DRC Leopards, imported from Thailand, is currently experiencing a price increase. It has risen from CDF 22,500 to CDF 27,000, or about 12 US dollars at an exchange rate of 2,300 FC per dollar, over the period from June 10th to 17th, 2026,” said Aruna Akilimali, entrepreneur and jersey seller at the Central Market of Kinshasa, in Gombe municipality. According to him, the increase is explained by product scarcity on the market combined with strong demand linked to the national team’s qualification and participation in the FIFA World Cup. During the same period, he noted that prices vary significantly depending on product range and quality. A jersey previously sold at CDF 8,000 is now negotiated at around CDF 12,000 (about USD 5).
He further indicated that children’s jerseys, previously sold at CDF 5,000, are now priced at CDF 9,500 (nearly USD 4).
He said this price increase reflects the growing enthusiasm of Congolese supporters for national team merchandise ahead of major international competitions. “I reassure the people of Kinshasa that a large shipment of jerseys in national colors will soon be available for all those who wish to purchase them,” he concluded. For Mrs. Sadra Kapinga, a street vendor at Matadi-Kibala market in Mont-Ngafula municipality, jersey sales have become an essential activity and a profitable source of income for traders. “Selling jerseys has become a necessity for many traders. It is also an important source of income, as every Congolese is proud of their country, especially after the DRC’s qualification for the World Cup, 52 years after its last participation,” she said. She added that wearing national colors helps strengthen unity and patriotism among the population.
“When we wear badges and jerseys in national colors, we affirm our unity and express our love for our country,” she concluded.
