Kinshasa: a community learning laboratory set up in Kintambo to promote sexual rights

Kinshasa, July 5th, 2026 (CPA). – A community learning centre was set up on Saturday at the Tiberi health centre in the municipality of Kintambo, in north-west Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as part of the micro-project ‘Young People and Sexual and Reproductive Rights’, run by an association for women with disabilities, according to a source from the association.

“As young people, you must be ambassadors for positive values, for spreading information on sexual and reproductive rights, for access to safe abortion care, and for promoting responsible sexuality,” has declared Francky Miantuala, technical adviser to the Congolese Association for the Liberation and Development of Mothers with Disabilities (Acoldemha). He has indicated that this community learning laboratory constitutes a forum for exchange designed to strengthen young people’s knowledge of their sexual and reproductive rights, whilst promoting the dissemination of reliable information within their communities. For her part, Cimone Annie Ngoie, president of Acoldemha, has indicated that this initiative aims to reduce backstreet abortions and early pregnancies through information, awareness-raising and access for young people to sexual and reproductive health services.

She has invited participants to pass on the messages they have learnt to their peers in order to contribute to lasting behavioural change. During the event, young people from the Itimbiri health district have been made aware of the consequences of backstreet abortions, the importance of using contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and the importance of practising responsible sexuality.

The micro-project ‘Young People and Sexual and Reproductive Rights’ forms part of efforts to promote the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people. Through the establishment of community learning centres, Acoldemha aims to create permanent spaces for dialogue, education and awareness-raising in order to prevent risky behaviour and promote access to high-quality health information and services.
