Kinshasa: Sanitation and waste evacuation an “absolute” priority for Bumbu burgomaster

Kinshasa, May 7th, 2026 (CPA).– Sanitation and waste evacuation have been considered an “absolute” priority by the mayor of Bumbu municipality, in central Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in order to improve the living environment of local residents, she told CPA on Thursday.

“I am determined to improve the living environment of residents by making sanitation and waste evacuation an absolute priority (…) through concrete actions and constant mobilization,” declared Marie Yagbato, mayor of Bumbu municipality. According to her, waste management in the municipality is a “real” battle in which she has committed herself in order to make the municipality “cleaner, healthier and more attractive.”

Sanitation in Bumbu municipality is among the priorities of the Kinshasa authorities. In recent months, several anti-unsanitary operations have been announced in the municipality. The Governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba, recently visited Bumbu to assess problems related to waste, drainage channels and deteriorated roads. He denounced the dumping of garbage into drainage systems and on public roads, which worsens flooding and unsanitary conditions. Among the actions mentioned under the “Kinshasa Ezo Bonga” program are the clearing of drainage channels, waste evacuation, public awareness campaigns on sanitation, and the strengthening of sanitation equipment.

Sanitation works have also been reported on certain roads near Bumbu, notably around Birmanie and Ngiri-Ngiri avenues, in order to improve water drainage and reduce flood risks.
