Kinshasa, September 21st, 2026 (CPA): – The gradual roll-out of seven hundred and fifty thousand (750,000) public litter bins in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as part of sanitation initiatives, must be accompanied by a regular monitoring mechanism to ensure the sustainability of the results, a civil society representative told the CPA on Monday.
« The gradual roll-out of 750,000 public litter bins across the capital’s 24 municipalities, announced with a view to combat poor sanitation and fly-tipping, should be accompanied by a regular monitoring mechanism to ensure the sustainability of the results, » has declared Mr Boaz Risasi, a member of the NGO Tosungana. According to him, this operation, which aims in particular to tackle fly-tipping and improve public hygiene, is an important initiative, but its success will also depend on maintaining these areas in a clean and tidy state.
“The work currently being carried out by young people on National Service, who regularly visit various local to clean rubbish from public spaces, is encouraging. But there is no permanent maintenance of cleanliness in the town. In some areas where the young volunteers have been, if you return a few days later, you will see that fly-tipping has resumed after their clean-up operation,” he has lamented. The roll-out of these public bins is part of the authorities’ efforts to improve sanitation in the capital. It involves the Presidential Task Force on Sanitation and the young people from the National Service, who are already active in several municipalities in Kinshasa. CPA/
