Kinshasa: the women in a municipality called upon to take mitigation activities to prevent flooding

Kinshasa, August 19th, 2025 (CPA).- The women from N’sola, Maziba, Dingi-dingi and Kisenso Gare, in the municipality of Kinseso, in the centre of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, have been called upon to carry out mitigation activities to combat flooding during an awareness day on Tuesday in Kinseso, organised by the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of Congo. « DRC Red Cross, as part of its sustainable national society and community resilience project, has called on women from these four neighbourhoods of Kinseso to carry out mitigation activities, plant vetivers (grasses), cleaning gutters, and digging ditches on their plots to retain water and prevent flooding, » has declared Wilhel Lufinkadio Matondo, focal point for community engagement and admissibility at the Red Cross.

She has furthermore sensitised the latter to menstrual hygiene management.  ‘We have spoken to them about menstrual hygiene, how to manage sanitary pads to protect themselves from infections, but also told them that poor management can pollute our environment,’ has she said.  According to one participant and resident of Maziba, « For me, this is the first time I have attended such lessons on menstrual hygiene, especially about how to manage the products we use, which can carry infections and I have made a commitment to comply with the separation of containers, as I used to mix everything together instead of using the same bucket during my menstrual period, which could cause me harm in the future. »  This activity is part of the ‘Sustainable National Society and Resilient Community’ project.
