Kinshasa: young people trained to make flower pots

Kinshasa, August 4th, 2025(CPA).- Young people from various municipalities in Kinshasa, the main town in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were trained on Monday in how to make flower pots from recycled materials. ‘We have started training around thirty young people from the municipality of Lemba, Kasa-Vubu and Ngaliema in how to make flower pots from recycled materials, in particular plastic bottles,“ has said Augustine Kasambule, coordinator of the ‘Mbongwana” project.

According to her, this initiative is part of the project’s aim to promote young people’s involvement in sustainable waste management and urban sanitation. For Ms Augustine, the training focuses on transforming plastic waste into useful and aesthetic objects, to help reduce pollution and beautify urban spaces. She also explained that the aim is to change young people’s attitudes to waste, by showing them that it can be a source of income and sustainable development.  The ‘Mbongwana’ project, launched in October 2023 for a period of three years, has already enabled several young people to be trained in the manufacture of ecological paving stones made from plastic waste.‘This new phase, which focuses on the creation of recycled flower pots, aims to diversify the skills acquired and increase the involvement of young people in waste recovery’, she has concluded.
