Kisangani, June 8th, 2026 (CPA).- Local neighborhood leaders were urged on Monday by the Mayor of Makiso Municipality in Kisangani, capital of Tshopo Province in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to raise public awareness of the « Nyumba Kumi » (Ten Houses) community security strategy during a parade. “We have decided to ask avenue leaders to gather residents so that we can educate them on the Nyumba Kumi (Ten Houses) security strategy,” said Simon Lowawa, Mayor of Makiso Municipality.
The decision followed the observation that neighborhood leaders had not sufficiently explained the strategy to residents to ensure its effective implementation despite its significant security benefits. The municipal authority considered it necessary to mobilize the population around the Nyumba Kumi strategy for the benefit of the community. All these measures are currently being refined to address the persistent insecurity affecting the city of Kisangani.
Neighborhood leaders called upon to help maximize provincial tax revenues
Grassroots administrative officials of Makiso Municipality were also called upon on Monday to facilitate the collection of provincial taxes in Kisangani, capital of Tshopo Province in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, during the same parade. “At the invitation of the burgomaster of Makiso, we have come to seek the cooperation of these local authorities in order to facilitate our work in the field during the collection of provincial taxes,” said Martens Sango, head of the Kisangani-Centre Division of the General Directorate of Taxes of Tshopo Province (DGIPT).
The provincial taxes targeted to maximize revenues include rental income tax, vehicle tax, motorcycle registration plate tax, motorcycle and vehicle sticker fees, as well as property tax. “We are responsible for raising awareness among taxpayers through these officials and agents of Makiso Municipality before launching field operations. We have explained the procedures for obtaining the required documents. Some informed taxpayers come voluntarily, particularly motorcycle taxi riders,” he added. According to him, the objective is to encourage the population to fulfill their tax obligations and enable the provincial governor to secure the resources needed to implement his development vision known as ‘Tshopo Mosala’.
