Likasi, June 23rd, 2026 (CPA).- Two weeks have been granted on Tuesday to unauthorised street vendors to move away from the area around the Women’s Monument in Likasi, Haut-Katanga province, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, by the mayor of Likasi, Henry Mungomba, CPA has learnt from administrative sources.
“We are giving the unauthorised vendors set up around the Women’s Monument two weeks to leave the area. From today, no motorcyclists will be allowed to park there. This monument is part of our identity and deserves respect, protection and a clean environment,” has declared Henry Mungomba, mayor of the city of Likasi. This decision follows an act deemed disrespectful by a large section of the local population, after an individual described as anti-social was seen performing incantations at this iconic monument in broad daylight.
In response to the outrage caused by this incident, the city authorities has indicated that measures to reorganise and secure the site are necessary in order to preserve this symbolic part of the city’s heritage. At the same time, the city’s mayor has deployed teams from the urban sanitation department in order to clean and beautify this public space, with the aim of restoring it to its former glory. This operation forms part of the measures taken by the town hall to combat the unauthorised occupation of public spaces and to strengthen the protection of Likasi’s iconic sites. CPA/
