Mbuji-Mayi, June 1st, 2026 (CPA).- The construction of the control tower at Mbuji-Mayi airport, the chief town of Kasaï Oriental (central Democratic Republic of the Congo), has been estimated on Monday at 90% complete by the chairman of the board of directors of the Air Traffic Authority (RVA), during a meeting with the provincial governor. “The control tower is practically 80%, 85%, 90%. The fire safety systems too. I think that by June 30th, two or three facilities will already be inaugurated. Meanwhile, safety-related infrastructure, including the fire protection system, is progressing at the same pace,” has declared Tryphon Kin-Kiey, chairman of the board of directors of the Airways Authority (RVA). “Eight months ago, when I was passing through here, the national terminal hadn’t even broken ground. Today, we can see that the terminal building has already reached the second floor,” he has added. “I am leading a delegation from the Board of Directors of the Airways Authority. This is a mission that has come from Lubumbashi, Kolwezi and Mbuji-Mayi today, and we must continue on to Mbandaka, Kananga and Bunia. This is a mission to monitor and verify the progress of the works being carried out at our airports,” he has continued. Beyond infrastructure, the Chairman of the RVA Board of Directors has emphasised to the governor the need to create a robust economic ecosystem capable to boost air traffic. “The stated aim is to prevent this major investment from becoming a ‘white elephant’. As a commercial enterprise, the RVA emphasises that the viability of this project depends on its ability to attract a steady flow of passengers, particularly business operators and investors, and not just tourists,” has said Kin-Kiey Mulumba. A comprehensive report on this inspection mission will be submitted to the RVA’s Board of Directors and to the Congolese government, the sole shareholder of the public enterprise.
