South Kivu: Several homes and public buildings destroyed by rain in Uvira

Uvira, November 5th, 2025 (CPA).– Homes and public buildings, including schools, churches and health facilities, were destroyed by rain on Wednesday in Kamanyola and Katogota in the territory of Uvira in South Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the CPA learned from local sources.  « The rain over the past two days has caused enormous material losses in the Ruzizi plain, in the territory of Uvira. In Katogota, 141 houses have been destroyed by violent winds accompanied by rain. In addition to these houses, churches, notably the CEPAC, Neo-Apostolic and Bethany churches, have been destroyed, while schools such as EP Catholique 2 and EP Adventiste have had their roofs blown off. Next to these destroyed buildings, there are also plants that have been ravaged,‘ said Mahangaiko Shabani, chief of the village of Katogota. ’In Kamanyola, the Mugerero, Saint Jean, Kamanyula2, Kombo and many other primary schools have been affected by the rain. The roofs of these buildings have been torn off and displaced. Beyond that, houses were largely destroyed in the villages of Kashenyi and Kambara in the Kamanyola group. Electrical wires and poles are lying on the ground, causing power cuts, » said Mr Bertin Zagabe, a notable figure and resident of Kamanyola. This notable figure did not hesitate to call for help in the face of this tragedy.  « We are asking people of good will, whether in Katogota or Kamanyola, to come to our aid. This is yet another natural disaster that will plunge us into chaos. Seeds have been destroyed, bridges have been washed away, and while the population is still suffering from the effects of war, without humanitarian aid, institutions will struggle to recover and food will soon be in short supply as a result of the damage caused by this rain, » he added. It should be noted that on Wednesday, several pupils did not attend school. Some were victims of violent winds in their homes. For urgent interventions, some school principals have begun minor repairs to contain the situation and start classes while waiting for the situation to normalize. ACP/
