Sydney attack: Prime Minister cites ‘Islamic State ideology’

Kinshasa, December 16th, 2025 (CPA). – The Australian Prime Minister has indicated on Tuesday that the perpetrators of the ‘anti-Semitic’ attack on a Sydney beach, which has left at least 15 people dead and 42 injured, were probably ‘motivated by the ideology’ of the ‘Islamic State’ group, have reported international media outlets.

‘It would appear that this has been motivated by Islamic State (IS) ideology. With the development of Islamic State over more than a decade, the world is grappling with extremism and this hateful ideology,’ has declared Anthony Albanese, head of the Australian government.  According to French radio station RFI, the authorities have described the attack as anti-Semitic, suggesting that the two men had become radicalised before committing this ‘mass murder’.

As a reminder, on Sunday evening, while a crowd was gathered on Bondi Beach for the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, Sajid and Naveed Akram, a father and son, have opened fire at least 40 times over a period of about ten minutes. The son, who came out of a coma this morning, is currently being questioned by the police. His father has been shot dead by the police during the attack. CPA/
