Telecommunications: the African Union establishes a headquarters in Kinshasa to develop technological infrastructure

Kinshasa, May 18th, 2026 (CPA).– The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) has been granted on Sunday of a headquarters in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, by the Minister in charge of Posts and Telecommunications, with a view to boost the development of technological infrastructure, according to a statement from the ministry received on Monday by CPA.

“On the side-lines of World Telecommunication Day,  the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) will be based on the sixth floor of the Safi Building, located next to Ecobank, along Boulevard du 30 Juin, (…) in Kinshasa, with the aim of significantly boosting the development of information and communication technology infrastructure across the African continent,” it is read. According to the source, at least ten well-equipped offices will serve as the working environment for this organisation, which brings together countries and mobile telecommunications providers.

Mr Jose Mpanda, Minister in charge of Posts and Telecommunications, quoted in the press release, has indicated that this headquarters is only temporary, particularly as the government has decided at one of its Cabinet meetings to construct a building for the UAT, either on the premises of the Congolese Post and Telecommunications Company (SCPT) opposite the University of Information and Communication Sciences (UNISIC, formerly IFASIC) in Gombe, or on the SCPT site opposite the African Union City in the Ngaliema district.

“I aim to have a Telecommunications Centre built, modelled on the Financial Centre and the Cultural and Artistic Centre for Central African countries,” he has added. The ceremony was attended by several officials, including the General Secretary for ICT, Aurelien Kamba, the President of the ARPTC, Christian Katende, and the General Director of the SCPT, Sandra Tshibonge. The return of the UAT headquarters, currently the only African Union institution to be hosted by DRC, comes 34 years after its relocation.
