The 100-patient mark for Ebola recoveries has been reached in eastern DRC

Kinshasa, June 23rd, 2026 (CPA).- More than 100 people suffering from Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been declared recovered, according to the epidemiological situation report provided on Tuesday by the Ministry in charge of Health.

“The key epidemiological indicators show that 112 people have recovered. There are 1,048 confirmed cases, 267 cumulative deaths among confirmed cases, and 371 patients currently being treated. The case fatality rate stands at 25.5 per cent and contact tracing is at 70.8 per cent,” it is read. “The response is making progress and tangible results are being achieved every day: 12 patients have recovered in 24 hours; 100 per cent of alerts have been investigated across the three provinces; 97 per cent of travellers have been screened at points of entry; and more than 80,000 people have been reached with awareness-raising messages in a single day,” the source has added. According to the document, the three affected provinces – Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu and Ituri – are following the same response plan to tackle this outbreak. Several challenges have also been identified in the fight against this outbreak, including those relating to strengthening collaboration with partners in the response.

“To overcome these hurdles (contact tracing, reception capacity, support for field teams, funding), DRC needs the strong commitment of all its partners. It is by working together, with consistent communication and mobilised resources, that we will protect the population and emerge from this outbreak stronger,” has emphasised the source. The Ituri province remains the epicentre of the outbreak with 54 cases. It is deploying teams across 22 health zones to carry out awareness-raising campaigns, ensure dignified and safe burials, and conduct intensive decontamination. For its part, the Sud-Kivu province has not recorded any new cases since May 26th. As for Nord-Kivu province, the report has indicated that 76,000 people have been reached through awareness-raising campaigns, 18 radio stations have been mobilised, and religious and community leaders have been engaged.
