Kinshasa, March 29th, 2026 (CPA). – The demographic pressure, with a population estimated at twenty million (20,000,000) inhabitants living in four hundred (400) neighbourhoods, is one of the challenges facing Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has said the city authority in a video from the town hall consulted on Sunday by CPA. “Kinshasa faces many challenges: 20 million inhabitants, 24 municipalities, 400 neighbourhoods, 40,522 avenues and streets, and demographic pressure. The various problems facing the city of Kinshasa are not just problems, but also opportunities for history to be written in the most beautiful way,” has said in the video Daniel Bumba, Governor of Kinshasa. The sanitation, he has added in the same video, is another challenge facing the Congolese capital. On this subject, the city authority has reported on a contract worth six hundred million US dollars (USD 600,000,000) signed with a Qatari company specialised in the production of bin bags for households waste collection. “We have a 600-million-dollar contract with a Qatari company that is supporting the city with the production of bin bags (…). We are making steady progress with the Kinshasa Sanitation Authority (Raskin), which is responsible for public hygiene as well as the cleaning of the city,” has indicated Governor Bumba. According to him, the collection of households waste in Kinshasa requires the use of one hundred and eight million (108,000,000) bin bags every month. “The local company produces only one million bin bags in 45 days. This represents a glaring shortfall because the monthly requirement is 108 million bin bags,” he has explained. The head of the city council has, moreover, reminded that he had acquired tipper lorries and street sweepers before announcing the arrival in Kinshasa, in the coming days, of a batch of 80 engines ordered from China. “The sanitation requires a certain methodology. We are starting from scratch and we are moving forward. We have set up public services to support this task in a methodical manner,” has concluded the Mayor of Kinshasa. ACP/
